My family just returned from traveling 900 miles and passing through 3 states in 10 days. We ministered, served with other brothers and sisters in Christ, snuck in a small family vacation, and saw some of the most glorious creation .

Everywhere we traveled we saw homes. Homes of various shapes, sizes, and varieties.

I started thinking about the word “home” and all the images and feelings this little word conveys.

In Psalm 84 the writer talks about the beauty of home, specifically in relation to the courts of the Lord.

Being in the Lord’s presence is a place of peace and rest. It is a place of protection and safety. It is a place to give thanks and praise.

My soul longs, yes, faints for the courts of the Lord; my heart and flesh sing for joy to the living God.

Even the sparrow finds a home, and the swallow a nest for herself…

Blessed are those who dwell in your house ever singing your praise.

Psalm 84:2-4

Our earthly homes may not always be a place of rest and safety. They may produce feelings of anxiety, worry, or fear. But there is a place we can call home that is one of peace and freedom.

It is found in the presence of Jesus. No matter where we go, or what road we are traveling, there is always room for us in His home. He calls us to be with Him and desires to share all He has to offer.

For a day in your courts is better than a thousand elsewhere. I would rather be a doorkeeper in the house of my God than dwell in the tents of wickedness.

For the Lord is a sun and shield; and bestows favor and honor. No good thing does he withhold from those who walk uprightly.

O Lord of hosts, blessed is the one who trusts in you.

Psalm 84:10-12

Just like Dorthy in the Wizard of Oz, we can easily lose our way. Our focus can become tainted and our feelings of defeat and frustration become a loud voice.

The key is to keep our eyes fixed on God. Allow Him to be our guide and fortress. Sit in His presence and listen to His whispers of love. Spend time in the Word and in prayer and find ways to give thanks for all of His blessings.

It is then we will know, it is so good to be “home”.
